THIRUMALAI NAYAKKAR MAHAL, the majestic Royal Palace built on the lines of  Dravidian and European Architecture.  This palace built by  the greatest of Nayakas ruler named Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal during the period of 17th century.  The original Palace complex was four times bigger than what it is today.  The Palace consisted of two residential portions named Swargavilasam and Rangavilasam.  There were other portions like a theatre, a Palace shrine, Royal Band stand, Armoury.  The structure of the Palace has 12meters high encosing walls, 300 meters length East West and 220 meters width North South.  The Palace is famous for its giant pillars. Pillar's height is 82 feet and width is 19 feet.
King Thirumalai Nayak's grandson Cholanayakan had demolish much of the Palace structure in order to build his own palace in Tiruchirappalli..
The  Royal Palace at present declared as a national monument as per provisions under The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological sites.
The Palace you can spot in most of the movies such as Bombay, Iruvar, Guru, Aadukalam.etc
